Every Port A beach day has the same moment. You’ve parked on the sand, the water looks a lot farther away than it did from the car, and you’re staring at two coolers, four chairs, an umbrella, and a bag of towels.

If you park on the beach between the South Jetty and beach marker 20, you’ll be parking facing the wooden bollards which are a fair distance from the water line. When I hosted my extended family in Port A this Summer, we had 8 folding chairs, two coolers and a beach tent to haul across the sand. It took 3 trips to get it all situated on the beach.

A quality beach wagon fixes that, but not just any wagon… a sturdy beach wagon. Those skinny-wheeled folding wagons are made for sidewalks and digs in the second it’s loaded. Here’s what I’d look for instead.

  • Wide wheels. Width matters more than size. Wide tires stay on top of the sand instead of digging in.
  • Brakes. You want it to stay put when you stop, especially with kids or on a slope.
  • An adjustable handle, so everyone in your group can pull without hunching.
  • A fold that fits your trunk or your rental’s closet.

My pick: Originsure Extra Large Heavy Duty Wagon

Best beach wagon for soft sand | Port Aransas Explorer @portaransastex | https://link.amazon/B00Ub5cWU

It opens to about 37 x 24 inches, enough for a cooler, chairs, towels, and the toy bag that somehow multiplies. It can hold 460 pounds while rolling, it has four 7-inch all-terrain wheels with brakes on the swivel front two, and it folds to about 9 x 12 x 24 inches.

The honest part. It’s a big wagon. Check the weight before you plan to lift it into a car alone, and if your beach kit is one chair and a towel, skip it. The listing says the wheels are made for hard sand, mud, and grass, so expect it to roll best on the firmer sand near the water and to take slightly more effort in deep, soft sand.

Pack heavy things low and in the center, pull instead of push, and hose it off after salty days so it lasts.

The short version: wide wheels, brakes, and a fold that fits your car. The Originsure is my pick for families and long weekends.
