There comes a sad moment during every Port Aransas vacation when it’s time to pack it all up and head home. The beach chairs are sandy. The cooler is somehow heavier than when you arrived. Someone can’t find their flip-flops. And everyone starts asking the question nobody wants to answer… “What time should we leave?”
If you’re like most visitors, the answer is usually, “Whenever checkout is.”
Unfortunately, that’s exactly what hundreds of other people are thinking. And a whole lot of cars start heading toward the Port Aransas Ferry at the exact same checkout time…10-11 am. The good news is that with a little pre-planning, you can often spend less time waiting in ferry-line traffic and more time enjoying your last day on the island.

Why Sunday Feels So Busy
If you’ve ever left Port Aransas on a Sunday afternoon and wondered why the ferry line seemed to stretch forever… You’re not imagining it. Most vacation rentals require checkout between 10:00 and 11:00 a.m. Hotels aren’t much different.
That means hundreds (sometimes thousands) of visitors all pack the car, grab one last breakfast taco, and head toward the ferry within the same hour. It’s basically beach vacation rush hour.
The Worst Time to Leave
If your schedule allows, shifting your departure from Port Aransas by even an hour or two can sometimes make your trip home much smoother and faster. While every day is different, the busiest departures from Mustang Island are often:
- Sunday late morning through early afternoon
- Monday after holiday weekends
- The end of Spring Break
- Fourth of July weekend
- Memorial Day weekend
- Labor Day weekend

Option 1: Leave Early and Beat the Crowds
If you’re an early riser, leaving Port Aransas early is often the easiest strategy. Wake up. Grab coffee. Load the car. Hit the ferry before many visitors have even started packing. You’ll also have more daylight for the drive home.
The downside? You may have to say goodbye to the beach a little sooner than you’d like. Nobody likes that part.

Option 2: Enjoy One Last Beach Morning
This might be my favorite option.
Instead of joining everyone else in the checkout rush and the growing ferry line, make your final morning count. Watch the sunrise. Take one more walk on the beach. Grab breakfast at your favorite local restaurant. Let the kids play in the sand one last time.
If your rental checkout time allows, you can often leave after the first wave of traffic has already made its way toward the ferry. Sometimes slowing down actually gets you home faster.

Option 3: Stay a Little Longer
You may not need to rush home. If you’re staying at a hotel that can hold your luggage, or if you’re checking out of a vacation rental and don’t mind spending a few more hours exploring, you can turn departure day into one last mini adventure.
Instead of sitting in the ferry line… Spend a little more time enjoying Port Aransas. Honestly, that’s usually a better memory than staring at brake lights for an hour.

Fun Things to Do Before Leaving the Island
Need to burn an hour or two? Port Aransas has plenty of ways to enjoy your last day.
1. Grab One More Breakfast
Vacation calories don’t count. At least that’s what I keep telling myself. Whether you’re craving pancakes, breakfast tacos, or a giant cinnamon roll, one last leisurely breakfast beats sitting in traffic. Check out my guide to the 5 Most Popular Breakfast Spots in Port Aransas.
2. Walk the Beach One Last Time
Even if you don’t swim, there’s something special about taking one final stroll along the Gulf before heading home. Take a few pictures. Collect one last shell. Watch the waves. It’s a much better goodbye than honking horns.
3. Visit Roberts Point Park
If you’ve never been, Roberts Point Park is a fun stop before leaving. Watch enormous ships pass through the channel. See if you can spot dolphins. Let the kids burn off some energy. It might become one of your favorite traditions before leaving Port A. Explore what makes the park such a fun place for everyone in my guide to Roberts Point Park in Port Aransas (Playground with Dolphin Views for Families).
4. Pick Up Some Souvenirs
Forgot to buy a t-shirt? Need saltwater taffy? Want one more Christmas ornament? Now’s your chance. Because nobody has ever gotten halfway to San Antonio and thought…“I’m so glad I forgot to buy that souvenir.”
5. Eat Seafood One Last Time
This is probably your last chance for fresh Gulf seafood before heading inland. Order the fried shrimp. Get the grilled fish tacos. Take home some fresh seafood if you’ve packed a cooler. Future You will be very grateful. Find your new favorite restaurant here: The Best Seafood Restaurants in Port Aransas, TX (Local’s Guide).
Don’t Forget These Last-Minute Items
When packing it up to head home, someone always forgets something or leaves something behind. Before pulling away from your rental, do one final walk-through to look for the following things:
- Chargers
- Phone cords
- Beach toys
- Swimsuits and towels hanging outside
- Sunglasses
- Medications
- Fishing gear
- Ice chest
- Refrigerator
- Freezer
- Bathroom drawers
- Closet
- Under the beds
And yes… Check the bathroom one more time. That’s where forgotten toothbrushes go to live. I highly recommend grabbing the The Ultimate Port Aransas Beach Packing List (+ printable checklist) to be sure you don’t leave anything behind.

Fill Up Before You Leave
Gas stations on the island, especially headed toward the ferry landing, can get busy on weekends. If your tank is getting low, filling up before joining the ferry line can save you from worrying about a low fuel tank in the ferry line, or searching for gas once you’re back on the mainland. If you’re driving several hours home, it’s one less stop you’ll have to make later.
Check the Ferry Wait Before Heading That Way
A quick glance at current ferry conditions can help you decide whether it’s worth grabbing lunch first or heading straight to the ferry line. Sometimes you’ll roll right aboard. Other times, you’ll wish you waited another hour. You can check the current Port Aransas Ferry Wait Time (Live Updates + Best Times to Go).
Already Missing Port Aransas?
Here’s the funny thing about leaving Port Aransas. About halfway home, someone in the car usually says one of two things. “We should have stayed another day” or… “When can we come back?”
It happens every single trip. Fortunately, Port Aransas isn’t going anywhere. The beach will still be here. The dolphins will still be swimming alongside the ferry. And the sunsets will still be just as beautiful. Until next time!
