There’s no holiday quite like the 4th of July in Port Aransas. 🇺🇸
The whole island turns red, white, and blue. Golf carts get decorated. Kids run around with popsicles and sparklers. Strangers wave at each other from their beach setups. And at night, the fireworks light up the harbor in a way that — I’ll just say it — never gets old, no matter how many times you’ve seen it.
It’s loud. It’s crowded. It’s full-on summer at peak volume. And it’s truly one of my favorite weekends to be here in Port A.
That said, the 4th is also the single busiest weekend of the year on Mustang Island — by a lot. The ferry lines back up. Restaurants hit full capacity by 5pm. Parking near the fireworks fills up hours before the show. None of that has to ruin your trip, but knowing what to expect makes a real difference.
Here’s what I’d tell you if you called me before your trip.— what to do, how to avoid the chaos, and how to actually enjoy your time here on Mustang Island.

Worth saying out loud: Independence Day on the 4th of July is the one holiday where Port Aransas really goes all out. The energy here is genuinely something to experience — and it’s a pretty great reminder to pause and appreciate the freedoms we get to enjoy on a day like this. However you spend it, I hope it’s a good one. 🇺🇸 🇺🇸 🇺🇸

The fireworks are free. You don’t need a ticket or a wristband. You just need to get there early enough to have a good spot. More on that below.
Instead of trying to figure it all out when you get here, here’s exactly how I’d plan it if I were you — what to do, what to skip, and how to keep the day feeling fun instead of frantic.
TIP: If you only remember one thing: claim your fireworks spot by late afternoon, because once the street fills in, you’re not moving your golf cart anywhere.

The Main Event: Fireworks at Roberts Point Park
Unlike Memorial Day weekend, the 4th of July does have one big main event — and it’s the fireworks. Everything else in town builds toward that night sky over the harbor.
Here’s how I’d plan around it:
- Stake out your spot at Roberts Point Park or along the harbor by mid-afternoon
- Bring chairs or a blanket, because the good grass goes fast
- Get there before the live music starts at 5pm so you’re not fighting the crowd later
- Settle in for fireworks (and a drone show) around 9pm
If you’d rather watch from the water instead of the lawn, the Scarlet Lady’s Fireworks Cruise is one of the best seats in town, departing at dusk through the Lydia Ann Channel, with the lighthouse and the show both in view.

Best Way to Spend the Day Before the Fireworks
July 4th in Port A is not a day to overshedule. The weather is peak summer (read: hot), and the whole town is moving a little slower on purpose. Here’s the rhythm that actually works:
Get to the beach early. Not “early for vacation” early — actually early. By 8am you’ll beat the biggest crowds and claim a stretch of sand that doesn’t feel like rush hour. By noon, the beach is at full capacity and the sun is relentless.
Take a proper midday break. This is not the time to push through. Go back to your rental, eat something, let everyone recharge. The fireworks don’t start until 9pm. You’ve got time.
Head back out by late afternoon. This is when you want to find your fireworks spot, grab dinner at a place with fast service, and just… settle in. The pre-show energy around the harbor is part of the experience.

Things to Do Beyond the Beach
Between the beach and the fireworks, there’s a full day to fill. Here are the activities worth building your 4th around if you want to mix things up.
Watch the Fireworks from the Water
This is the one I’d pick if I were doing it fresh. The Scarlet Lady’s 4th of July Fireworks Cruise departs at dusk through the Lydia Ann Channel and puts you right in front of the show with the Lydia Ann Lighthouse in the background. Full bar, signature drinks, and you don’t have to fight anyone for a blanket spot on the lawn. Book ahead — it fills up.
Dolphin Watching Tours
Morning dolphin tours are one of the best ways to start the holiday, before the heat and the crowds really kick in. Most run 1.5–2 hours and cost $35–60 depending on the boat and date.
- Fisherman’s Wharf: Dolphin Watching Tour or Sunset Cruise
- Neptune Charters: The Original Dolphin Watch & Shrimp Trawl — the live touch tank is always the highlight for kids
- The Scarlet Lady: Dolphin Adventure Tours — departs from Deep Sea Headquarters with great views of the Lydia Ann Lighthouse
Holiday weekends book fast — reserve in advance if you can.
Fishing Charters
The 4th of July is one of the better fishing days of the summer, and getting out on the water early is a great reason to be up before the crowds hit the beach.
- Bay fishing → relaxed half-day trips, great for families
- Deep sea → full offshore experience for the serious anglers in your group
- Find your charter with Fisherman’s Wharf, Deep Sea Headquarters, or Dolphin Dock
Watersports Time
More ways to get on the water that don’t involve hooks:
- Jetskis, kayaks, and stand-up paddleboards at Gettin’ Salty Watersports
- Parasailing with Chute ‘Em Up Parasail
- Bike rentals at Island Surf Rentals
Golf Cart Cruising (in your best red, white, and blue)
This one sounds silly until you’re in the middle of it. On the 4th of July, Port Aransas streets fill with decorated carts draped in flags and streamers, with passengers in full patriotic gear blasting country music and waving at everyone. It’s completely unorganized and completely wonderful.
Grab some flag streamers and red, white, and blue string lights and join the flag fun.

Where to Eat with Less Wait
Holiday weekends in Port Aransas mean holiday-weekend lines — and on the 4th, that’s especially true. The good news is you have options that don’t involve standing outside a restaurant for an hour while your kids melt in July heat.
My honest advice: Eat before 5pm or after 8pm.
That two-hour window in between is when every restaurant in town hits full capacity simultaneously. If you time your dinner around the fireworks schedule — early meal, then head to Roberts Point Park by 7pm — you’ll sidestep the worst of it.
Or go the other direction: grab food to-go and make it part of the fireworks experience. Takeout on a blanket near the harbor with the whole sky turning red, white, and blue is a pretty good dinner.

What to Bring for Fireworks Night
The daytime setup and the fireworks setup are two different things. For the evening at Roberts Point, here’s what actually matters:
- Folding beach chairs with backpack straps — you’ll carry these a distance from wherever you park
- Sandproof blanket — doubles as ground cover on the lawn
- Insulated soft cooler — pack drinks and snacks for the wait
- Bug spray — the mosquitoes near the harbor come out at dusk, and they will find you
- Glow sticks or a string light lantern for the kids to have something to do during the long wait before 9pm
- A blanket or light jacket — it actually cools down a bit after sunset even in July
Wear your red, white and blue
If there’s ever a weekend for it, this is it:
- USA Beach Towels
- Womens USA Bracelets
- Womens USA T-shirt
- USA Insulated Tumbler
- RTIC Insulated Cooler

Where to Stay for the 4th of July in Port Aransas
If you haven’t booked yet and the 4th is on your radar — start looking now. This weekend books faster than any other on the island, and the places worth staying in go first.
One thing a lot of first-timers don’t realize: Port Aransas beach access happens through side roads off the main highway — not hotels sitting on the sand. So “beachfront” in the traditional sense isn’t really how it works here. What you actually want is a rental within easy reach of a beach access road, and somewhere with a short enough golf cart ride to Roberts Point Park that the fireworks night logistics don’t become a whole thing.
The most important factors for the 4th specifically:
- Proximity to Roberts Point Park (or somewhere you can golf cart to it without getting stuck in traffic)
- Good parking for your vehicles — this matters more on the 4th than any other weekend
- Enough space for your group to spread out after a long day

See You at the Fireworks
There’s something about the 4th of July in Port Aransas that just feels right. The flag-covered golf carts. The smell of sunscreen and barbecue in the air all day. The way the harbor goes quiet right before the first firework goes off and then erupts.
It’s not a subtle holiday — and Port Aransas doesn’t try to make it one.
If you go in to the weekend knowing it’s going to be crowded and hot and a little chaotic, and you plan around the fireworks rather than trying to squeeze in everything else too, you’ll end up with the kind of 4th that people talk about on the drive home.
The beach in the morning. Something good to eat. A good spot on the lawn by late afternoon. And then that first boom over the harbor at 9pm.
That’s really all you need.
Happy 4th of July from Port Aransas, and thank you to everyone who has served and continues to serve. We appreciate you. 🇺🇸 🇺🇸 🇺🇸
