Quick note: I always recommend checking vacation rental availability early — especially for spring break, summer, and SandFest when the best homes book months ahead.

Let me save you from the classic Port Aransas mistake: showing up excited for a beach day… and realizing you forgot the one thing that would’ve made the whole trip easier.
I’ve done it. Everyone has.
The sun is stronger than you think, the wind is definitely stronger than you think, and once you’re out on the beach, you really don’t want to run back into town.
So this is the exact packing list I use (and recommend to friends) for a stress-free Port A beach day — including a few things most people don’t think about until it’s too late.
This is what I cover here:
- Beach day setup essentials
- Family beach must-haves
- What first-time visitors always forget
- 5 Items you may not have thought about
- Clothing & personal items to pack
- Ferry & car travel extras
- What NOT to bring to the beach

Beach Setup Essentials (the things that can make or break your beach day)
These are the non-negotiable, essential must-have items for the beach in Port Aransas. If you forget these, you’ll feel it.
1. A serious beach canopy (not just an umbrella)
Port Aransas sun is strong, and umbrellas don’t always cut it when the wind picks up (which it will). Don’t let the lack of shade be the reason you leave the beach.
- MY TOP PICK: Sun Ninja Beach Tent Sun Shelter
- Why I love it: it’s very lightweight, an ideal height for standing underneath and easy to set up. It’s available in a 7’x7′ or 10’x10′ size, and packs up compact for the car.
- Why I love it: it’s very lightweight, an ideal height for standing underneath and easy to set up. It’s available in a 7’x7′ or 10’x10′ size, and packs up compact for the car.
- ANOTHER GREAT OPTION: Shibumi Shade Beach Canopy
- Why it’s becoming so popular: compact for packing in the car, fast and simple setup and fun to see it blowing in the wind (you can spot them from far away, kind of cool!). Just know that you may need to adjust the angler the sun later in the day.

TIP: I don’t usually recommend umbrellas for the beach in Port Aransas, simply because gusts of wind can pull them out of the sand and send them tumbling down the beach (I’ve seen it more than once). If you DO use an umbrella in the sand, be sure you’ve got some solid sand anchors to keep it from getting picked up by the wind (see my pick below).
2. Heavy-duty beach chairs
Not all beach chairs survive Port A wind. If it’s lightweight and flimsy, there’s a good chance it’s tumbling down the beach at some point. Look for something low to the ground and sturdy — it makes a huge difference.
Beach chairs that have backpack straps matter more than you think when you’re hauling gear across sand in Port A. You need your hands free, so choose a chair that is lightweight and can be thrown over your shoulder.
- MY TOP PICK: Sportbrella Backpack Beach Chair ( + Portable Table)
- Why I love it: it’s a well-built beach chair made with durable nylon fabric that I love using, it folds up easily and has a cupholder and storage on the back large enough to hold a towel, drink, sunscreen and more.
- Why I love it: it’s a well-built beach chair made with durable nylon fabric that I love using, it folds up easily and has a cupholder and storage on the back large enough to hold a towel, drink, sunscreen and more.
- ANOTHER GREAT OPTION: Tommy Bahama Backpack Beach Chair ( + Wide-Seat option)
- Why it’s so popular: the Tommy Bahama brand is always popular for its notoriety and coastal colors. This is a lightweight beach chair has an insulated cooler bag attached, a small neck pillow, is made with polyester fabric and has 5 reclining positions for laying out on the beach.

TIP: Rinse your chairs after you leave the beach. Wash off all the sand and saltwater to prevent rusting or stiffness when you use them again.
3. Sand-proof beach blanket
This is huge, literally. A sand-proof beach blanket is huge for families, especially with small children. Sand shakes right off like magic. No more gritty sandwiches for lunch.
- WHAT I USE: Wekapo Sand-Free Beach Blanket
- Why I love it: it’s huge, comes in 3 sizes and lots of colors, and it will match your Shibumi shade above! #winning

- ANOTHER OPTION I LOVE: Genovega Waterproof Sandproof Beach Blanket
- Why it’s a great choice: I love the look of it — bold, nautical stripes and it’s easy to carry with a strap and handle. It’s waterproof and can even double as a car or golf cart blanket.

4. Sunscreen (don’t underestimate the sun here)
The Port Aransas sun is no joke — even on cloudy days. I always bring more than I think I’ll need because reapplying out there is not optional, unless you want to be miserable later. And nobody wants that.
- MY GO-TO SUNSCREEN: Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunscreen ( + Neutrogena Beach Defense Sunscreen)
- Why I love it: Neutrogena’s sunscreens absorb quickly and won’t leave that greasy feel that makes sand stick to you. The sheer dry-touch is my husband’s favorite too.

- ANOTHER GREAT OPTION: Sun Bum Original SPF 30 Sunscreen Lotion ( + Sun Bum Original SPF 30 Sunscreen Face Stick)
- Why it’s so popular: Sun Bum has a ridiculously yummy smell like bananas, and it’s a favorite among the beach-dwellers. Their products may be more pricey than most store brands, but hey if it works… I’ll buy it. Btw their banana-flavored lip balm will have you licking your lips all day.
TIP: Avoid the inexpensive, super greasy sunscreens — they may be cheaper in price but the sand sticks to you instantly. Grab my favorite beach sunscreen that is water-resistant and has a dry-touch feel.

Family Beach Must-Haves (if you’re bringing kids)
These are the essentials where comfort saves your sanity. Don’t go beachin’ in Port A without these.
5. A beach wagon (definitely a game-changer)
If you bring one thing with kids — bring this beach wagon. It can haul everything you need across the sand… coolers, chairs, toys, towels — all in one trip.
- MY TOP PICK: Whitsunday Folding Beach Wagon
- Why I love it: This wagon is deep for carrying all your beach gear, has the wide sand-durable wheels to move easily across the beach, and has a removable table top that can be used for eating lunch at the beach (or games, or making drinks!). If you bring anything to the beach, bring this!

- ANOTHER GREAT OPTION: Mac Sports Collapsible Beach Wagon
- Why this is a popular pick: This is a great multipurpose wagon that even kids could sit in. It has a side table with cupholders and it folds up easily.

6. Insulated soft-sided cooler
It’s hot here, and I get thirsty at the beach fast. But keeping drinks cold in the 100° summer heat in Port Aransas is not optional, it’s essential. Get an insulated cooler that can handle the heat and still stay chill inside.
- MY ALL-AROUND TOP PICK: YETI Hopper Portable Soft Cooler ( + this Yeti Rambler Insulated Tumbler)
- Why I love this: it’s shaped like a tote bag, not a typical cooler, which makes it easier to carry over the shoulder or with the longer adjustable strap. I love that it can keep several drinks REALLY COLD and still have room for fruit/veggies or other snacks. It’s a great size!

- ANOTHER GREAT CHOICE: RTIC 15-can Everyday Soft Cooler (or this RTIC Soft Backpack Cooler)
- Why it’s a great option: this is a great well-made brand and this cooler is an ideal size for a small family who just needs a few drinks while out on the beach, and it comes with a built-in bottle opener… how awesome is that?

TIP: Freeze 2-3 bottles of water overnight to use as ice-packs in your cooler. Then you can also drink them as the ice melts.
7. Pop-up changing tent (*an underrated find*)
This one surprises people… a pop-up changing/shower tent. For little kids, wet swimsuits, or just a little bit of privacy for adults changing after swimming — having a simple, discrete place to change is incredibly useful.
Look for one labeled “showering tent” to ensure it has no bottom (no sand to shake out at the end of the day). You’ll be surprised how often you use this pop-up, ON AND OFF the beach.
- WHAT I LOVE: Wolfwise Pop Up Changing Tent (+ this Sun Ninja portable outdoor shower)
- Why it’s awesome: Sometimes you might need a little privacy at the beach, and this pop up gives you space to change clothes or “take a moment”. It’s made of lightweight polyester so the sand shakes right off of it. Plus, it’s a breeze to open and fold away in its own bag.

What first-time visitors always forget
8. Extra towels
(bring 1-2 more than you think)
The sandy beach + showering + pool = you’ll run through those towels fast. Always take a few extras to use as blankets, seat-covers on hot golf cart seats, or sandy feet-cleaning.
- MY GO-TO BEACH TOWELS: Dock & Bay Quick Dry Sand-Free Towels
- Why I love them: First of all, they’re oversized so they can double as a golf cart seat cover in the sun or a blanket if it’s cooler. These towels are super soft, very absorbent, but dry quickly so they don’t hold smells. *A favorite in our house.*

9. Sand Stakes for Tents
The wind is real here. Standard tent stakes and umbrella anchors won’t hold very well when the wind from the Gulf picks up or changes directions. Be prepared with quality stakes that will keep your shade tent securely in place, right where you need it.
- MY TOP PICK: Cobaryen Heavy Duty Spiral Sand Anchor Stakes
- Why I like these: With the spiral design, these stakes really get into the sand and stay put, unlike straight pegs in the shifting sand. They hold really well in coastal winds.

10. After-sun skin care
Picture it… you’ve been in the sand and water all day, it’s hot, and you’re leaving the beach feeling exhausted and drained. Your best bets for after-sun care are refreshing aloe gel, light cooling spray, and electrolyte hydration packets to toss in your water. This beach-recovery combo works wonders to cure your inevitable sun hangover.
- MY TOP CHOICE FOR SUNBURNS: Sun Bum Cool Down Aloe Vera Spray ( + Sun Bum Cool Down Aloe Vera Lotion afterward)
- Why I love it: First of all, if you’ve gotten “too much” sun, you don’t want anything rubbing on your sensitive skin, so I opt for a gentle aloe spray until the “fire” subsides. Then I use the aloe lotion to gently soothe and rehydrate, plus it smells lovely!

- OTHER GREAT OPTIONS I USE:
- Liquid IV Hydration Multiplier Packets

TIP: Prep for your beach day by adding these hydration packets to your water in advance, then tossing them in your cooler. Dehydration happens faster than you may expect when spending the day in the sun. I keep these tucked in every bag.

5 Items to bring you may not have thought about
- Waterproof phone case
Why I like this one: You slip your phone into it and you don’t have to remove your existing case, and there’s space for cards and cash in it too. - Baby shade tent
Why this is great: You can keep your youngest sand-free and out of the direct sun for playing or nap time. - Anti-chafe stick
Why it’s so good: Keeps sand from chafing your thighs or your kids’ stomach when body-boarding. It’s the little things that help so much. - Handheld portable fan
Why I love it: Sometimes you just need to make your own breeze, up close. It has 3 speeds and also acts as a flashlight and backup power bank. - Beach towel clips
Why I use them: The wind in Port A can be strong coming off the Gulf, so keep your stuff in place by clipping it to your chair or shade tent or golf cart — lots of uses!

What NOT to bring to the beach in Port Aransas
Sometimes less is more. Save yourself the time and energy of bringing everything “just in case”. Smart packing is better than overpacking, so keep it simple — beach days are better when you’re not worried about your stuff.
- Glass bottles — they break in sand and are banned by the city
- Cheap umbrellas — the wind gusts will carry them off
- Too many heavy coolers — they won’t roll in soft sand
- Your entire kitchen — only the essentials are needed
Don’t forget half the stuff you need for the beach

Because nothing ruins a Port Aransas trip faster than realizing you forgot shade… towels… or sunscreen. I created this simple, no-fluff Ultimate Port Aransas Packing Checklist that covers:
✔ The beach setup items people regret forgetting
✔ Kid + family extras that make life easier
✔ The “why didn’t we bring that?” items first-timers miss
✔ Ferry + car travel day essentials
✔ What you actually don’t need to pack
No overthinking. Just the real stuff you’ll actually use.
